Arztpraxis Aschenbrenner: Dr. med. Katja Aschenbrenner

As a physician, I see you,

the person behind the symptoms.

With your personal history, your individual needs, and your own path to health.

In my practice, you will find space for understanding, time for your questions, and a medically sound, holistic perspective that integrates body, mind, and life circumstances. I accompany you not only with my medical expertise, but also with experience, intuition, and a genuin human interest in you.

Respect and Dignity

You can expect to be met with mindfulness, appreciation, and genuine attention. I take your wishes seriously and support you without prejudice — regardless of your background or life situation.

Compassion

I listen carefully, take your feelings seriously, and respond to what you need in the moment. My goal is for you to feel understood, safe, and truly seen — without pressure and always on equal footing.

Freedom

You receive clear medical recommendations along with the freedom to choose the path that truly suits you. Together, we decide which steps are meaningful, appropriate, and realistically achievable.

Independence

My treatment decisions are guided exclusively by what is helpful and health-promoting for you. I work free from external constraints — transparently, honestly, and fully dedicated to your well-being.

I am Dr.

Katja Aschenbrenner, M.D.

As a fully licensed physician, my professional passion lies in a holistic medical perspective on the patient and in understanding the bio-psycho-social interconnections involved in the development of illness and the maintenance of health.

You can

rely on

Strength, vitality, and longevity

In my practice, I combine natural healing approaches such as classical homeopathy and Ayurveda with functional medicine and psychotherapy. In addition, I use conventional medical therapies whenever they are appropriate, necessary, or desired by you. The goal is a treatment approach that strengthens your vitality and supports long-term health. I put great emphasis on addressing individual needs and circumstances.

Reliable care from a single source

After studying medicine at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the University of Barcelona, and completing my doctoral thesis with the grade summa cum laude, I gained several years of clinical experience as an attending physician at Dresden University Hospital. For more than 10 years, I have been running my own practice for holistic and functional medicine in Berlin. My patients value having a reliable, competent physician at their side who is trained in both conventional and complementary medicine.

Getting to the root causes

My scientific work has taught me to look deeper for underlying causes. My doctoral research on subclinical eating disorders was awarded the Doctoral Prize of the German College of Psychosomatic Medicine (DKPM). A scholarship from the German Research Foundation (DFG) enabled me to complete a two-year postdoctoral research fellowship at Yale University in the United States. There, I investigated the relationship between (disordered) eating behavior and neuronal activity using functional MRI (fMRI). Today, I apply this scientific mindset to exploring the causes of your symptoms. When time allows, I continue to engage in scientific work. You can find my list of publications here.

More about my

personal journey

What shaped me

As a working mother of three children, I know this feeling well: the desire to be strong — and at the same time moments when everything feels overwhelming. The pursuit of balance accompanies us throughout life. This is precisely where gentle therapeutic approaches combined with solid medical expertise can make a meaningful difference.

After completing my medical studies, doctorate, and several years as an attending physician in the Department of Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics at Dresden University Hospital, I went to Yale University in the U.S. for a two-year postdoctoral research stay. It was a time of reflection. After many years in conventional medicine, I felt that something was missing: a true focus on the whole person.

During this time, I also began to develop a strong interest in functional medicine and have continued to pursue advanced training in this field to this day. This includes successful completion of intensive continuing education programs such as:

  • Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice
  • Re-establishing Hormonal Balance in the Hypothalamic, Pituitary, Adrenal, Thyroid, and Gonadal Axis
  • Clinical Solutions for Mitochondrial and Metabolic Dysfunction
  • Restoring Gastrointestinal Equilibrium: Practical Applications for Understanding, Assessing and Treating Gut Dysfunction

(Institute for Functional Medicine, USA)

For several years now, I have also focused intensively on bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. Through numerous specialized trainings, I have developed expertise as a hormone specialist — not only for menopause-related treatment, but for both women and men.

After my return

to Germany

Healing and recovery

After returning to Germany, I completed several multi-year additional training programs specifically for physicians. These included earning the Homeopathy Diploma from the German Central Association of Homeopathic Physicians, the additional qualification Homeopathy from the Berlin Medical Chamber, and certification as a Medical Ayurveda Specialist at the European Academy for Ayurveda. I also regularly and continuously participate in continuing education in both complementary and conventional medical fields.

It is very important to me to remain up to date in both areas — holistically — with current research and clinical insights. This is one reason why functional medicine resonates so strongly with me: it represents a holistic medical system at the highest scientific level. Since 2021, I have also been certified as a Virtual Coach (Eben Pagan Training).

Since 2014, I have been running my practice for holistic and functional medicine in Berlin with great joy, dedication, and a steadily growing patient base. The combination of solid conventional medical knowledge and complementary medical approaches enables me to offer optimized holistic care. While striving for the benefits of gentle therapeutic methods, I always remain mindful of the limits of conventional medicine.
