Histamine and hormones: A complex interplay (Part 1)

Introduction

I am often asked what connection exists, especially in women, between histamine and hormones.
Histamine-related symptoms within the menstrual cycle or during hormonal transition phases
Many women with histamine intolerance or mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) notice that their histamine-related symptoms change or differ within the menstrual cycle or during hormonal transition phases (e.g. pregnancy, menopause). This is a very good observation! It is important to get to know our body and its reactions and to pay attention to different hormonal phases. Because then it is also possible to respond specifically with treatment or by adjusting lifestyle (e.g. diet).

Histamine has many functions in the body

Histamine, a biogenic amine that fulfills a variety of physiological functions in the body, plays a central role in our immune system, but also in other processes such as the regulation of sleep and appetite. Less well known is the connection between histamine and hormones, especially sex hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. This relationship is complex and has far-reaching effects on health, particularly in women.

Histamine: More than just a response to allergies

Histamine is mainly known for its role in allergic reactions. It is released by mast cells and leads to typical symptoms such as itching, swelling, and redness. However, histamine also has other important functions in the body, such as regulating stomach acid production and transmitting nerve signals in the brain.

Hormones: The control units of the body

Hormones are chemical messengers that are produced by different glands in the body. They play a key role in regulating growth, metabolism, reproduction, and many other important bodily functions. Sex hormones such as estrogen and progesterone are not only important for reproduction, but also influence, for example, mood, bone health, and the cardiovascular system.

In my next blog, I will go into more detail about the specific interactions between histamine and the sex hormones estrogen and progesterone as well as the use of bioidentical hormones in histamine-related diseases.
